Ueno Park & Shinobazu-no-ike Pond

上野公園&不忍池

I the early 17th century, whole area of Ueno park was the precincts of Kan’ei-ji temple 寛永寺, which has been the temple of Tokugawa family (The Shogun of Edo government).

Ueno park is about 1 km from east to west and about 1.3 km from north to south. The park covers an area of 53 hectares, about 11 times of the Tokyo Dome, and Shinobazu-no-ike Pond at the back side occupies significant space with the lotus flowers green carpet completely enveloping the pond in summer.

The best time to see lotus flowers is in the morning in early August. It contrasts with the high-rise buildings and Bentendo Temple 不忍池辨天堂 in the background.
