白石川堤一目千本桜 (宮城県)

The Shiroishi Riverbank Hitome Senbonzakura, or ‘1000 Cherry Blossoms at a Glance’ is a famous cherry blossom viewing spot in the Tohoku region, attracting more than 300,000 visitors each year.

The line of cherry trees stretches between Funaoka 船岡 and Ogawara 大河原 stations on the JR Tohoku Line, and it is a short walk from both stations.

Approximately 1,200 trees are lined up for 8 kilometers on both sides of the Shiroishi River and the banks turn pink from mid to late April. There many kinds of cherry trees such as white mountain cherry, double-flowers, and an abundance of Yoshino cherry, the most common type in Japan.

Funaoka Castle Park

Funaoka Castle Park is designated as one of the top 100 places to see cherry blossoms in Japan. The park is located a 15-minute walk from JR Fuanoka Station, which can be reached by JR train from Sendai in about 30 min. Cross the park’s bridge over the train tracks to meet a near-endless line of riverside cherry blossoms. This is one starting point of the Hitome Senbonzakura line of 1,000 cherry blossoms.
