Having prospered as Japan’s best spa resort from ancient times, Kusatsu attracts many visitors in all seasons. During the late 19th century, the German medical scientist, Erwin von Baelz, introduced Kusatsu to the world by praising the environment, the water and hot springs. The hot springs have the characteristics of high temperature and strong acidity, which in effect is a strong sterilizing medium. The hot springs are efficacious for neuralgia, muscle pains, recovery from sickness and fatigue, chronic skin diseases, etc. In 2000, the Baelz Memorial Hall and Spa Center was built as one of the projects to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Kusatsu Town. This is the state-of-art facility in the old spa resort town and a popular new attraction of Kusatsu.
Kusatsu Hot Springs Water Quality
Sulphur-rich gases emanating from the earth infuse the hot springs of Kusatsu with sulphuric acid. With a PH ranging from1.7 to 2.1, a few seconds is all it takes to destroy bacteria ad harmful microbes. The hot water in a temperature range of 25-96 degrees C gushes out of more than 100 fountainheads in various sizes. To maintain the beneficial effects of this natural hot springs water, it is cooled naturally, never diluted.
